Bio
Amanda Jane Wilkes (BFA)
I am an established New Zealand artist. Growing up in the 70's and 80's on the outskirts of Christchurch surrounded by open skies and an expansive vista nurtured my love for the landscape around me.
I graduated in the early 1990's with a BFA in painting from the University of Canterbury under the tutelage of Ridwan Tompkins. I have sold my works by commission over the last 27 years and in a number of prominent galleries throughout Christchurch and Southland Otago. My artworks are now held in a number of private collections in Europe, America, China and Australasia.
My abstracted landscapes have their roots in New Zealand’s rich landscape tradition. Canterbury, Dutch artist Petrus van der Velden, the first head of UC Fine Arts and the Canterbury Regionalists of the 20th Century have been strong influences in my creative learning processes, also Mid-century American abstraction, Canadian artist Milton Avery and the hovering forms of Rothko’s late works'.
